Budget Update
HOLMDEL TOWNSHIP SCHOOL DISTRICT
OFFICE OF THE SUPERINTENDENT
Dr. J. Scott Cascone

April 28, 2026
Dear Holmdel Township School Community,
As part of the challenging process of developing the 2026–27 school district budget, the tentative proposal previously included the elimination of the middle/high school dance program and dance teacher position. We recognize the concern this raised within our community.
At last week’s Board of Education meeting, many parents and students advocated passionately for reinstatement. While I was unable to attend due to a family commitment, the Board shared that the administration would take a closer look. Having since reviewed the testimony, I want to acknowledge that the voices of our students were especially powerful and persuasive, reminding us that our work is first and foremost in service to them.
We continue to face significant financial challenges and ongoing structural deficits. However, due to a decrease in student enrollment in county vocational high schools, and with confirmation of those enrollment numbers only received last Friday, April 24, the district was able to recoup approximately $140,000. I recommended, and the Board supports, using these funds to reinstate the dance teacher position.
This reflects our commitment to listening and responding to our community. At the same time, our financial challenges remain, and difficult decisions may lie ahead in future budget cycles, potentially impacting valued programs.
Even so, we have found a path forward once again. The Board has already begun discussions on next year’s budget, including exploring ways to generate additional revenue and further engage the community in understanding priorities.
We also want to reaffirm that both the Board and administration strongly support the arts. Despite this year’s difficult considerations, the district continues to offer an exceptional K–12 visual and performing arts program.
The agenda for tomorrow evening’s Board of Education meeting will be posted shortly and will include the proposed final budget, reflecting the reinstatement of the dance teacher position for Board approval.
On behalf of the Board of Education and administration, thank you to everyone who has shared their voice and engaged in this process.
Sincerely,
Dr. J. Scott Cascone
Superintendent of Schools
